Slowing Down

My side projects have been moved to the side the past few weeks. Which is especially sad since everything is set up and ready to go at PS:One. My new job has been really great, its just taking me a little time to settle in before I can schedule up some doing. I’ve also been switching a little bit between night and day shifts (and I have confirmed that I am a night person on my one week of night shifts). I am so excited to be working in TV again, its like I’m finally back on the right career path.

There is however some fun on the horizon… BARTENDING CLASSES to be exact! About a year ago, this was to be my fallback career should Kraft ever fall through. Well, they didn’t fall through and I’m still going strong, but I had to use the Groupon I purchased, so I scheduled me some classes. I can’t wait to invent me a drink and get creative with booze.

After that, I’m going to take another whack at cosplay (once I get me a new sewing machine- the POS I have makes me sooooooooo angry!)

And then heading into the summer, I am all geared up for my second season of sailing. This year is going to be awesome- I’m studying, I got my own gear, and I’m going to win a race dangit! I’ll be bringing my go pro along for ride so expect some timelapse races.

Lots of good stuff coming. Just gotta get back on the night shift so I can be all productive at this blogging and doing!

Knife Forging – 104 Fold Steel

So I’m taking one more knife forging class this year and I got to do something different this time. Last time we used steel cable which gave a more circular pattern. This time, we layered different steel and did multiple folds. I had planned on making a small tanto letter opener so this method was perfect for the look I was going for. Day one was all forge welding and the most basic of shaping.

Hardie Cut Tool & Small Fuller

** this post is actually from some time ago, just got the video together now**
Day two of tool making was quite productive. I had my first taste of a cutoff saw, I did some good* MIG welding, and generally got some hammering done. I brought my camera to take pictures, but I also had my NEW GoPro! I was dying to try it out and so my camera was neglected. However, I do have some videos for you, so check out the action: Continue reading

Lots of Making

So I took a week vacation and now I am feeling revived and ready to make things happen. I was nominated and elected to be the wood and metal shop’s Area Host at Pumping Station: One and have set myself to the task! Unfortunately I didn’t take any before-and-after pictures to show just how much progress I’ve made in the past week, but believe me, it was a lot. All the machines are now accessible as well as the hot metal area now having an official space. I still need to make the forge table and find a two foot tall, solid stump with a 12 inch diameter to mount the anvil upon, but the blacksmith shoppe is very close to functional.

The first thing I looked into was safety. The Area Hosts for PS:One are mainly responsible for keeping their area clean, usable, safe, and awesome- or at least that’s how I interpret the position. Strangely enough we had no fire/smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector, or fire extinguishers in the shop. Fixed that as of tonight.

Secondly I am looking into organization. I have moved stuff and machinery around to make better use of the room and make sure there was an area for the hot metals. Luckily there are a solid bunch of people who also care about making the Wood/Metal shop awesome and organized who not only helped move stuff, but have been working to make the shop better. One member made a shelving unit to hold all our wood and another person installed a ton of pegboard for our tools. This Tuesday I’ll be restoring the tabletop for a radial arm saw and the beginnings of organizing the tools onto the pegboard.

There is one big issue that we will have to look into soon to get the full use of the metals area and that is ventilation. I have some schematics for a system to suck the air from a local area and then push it to the fan in the garage, I just need people more knowledgeable about building such things to look it over and help me figure out the build and installation.
